Lithuania: Amendments to the Law on Legal Protection of Personal Data have come into force.

The new wording of the Law on Legal Protection of Personal Data, which came into force on July 16, is oriented towards the directly applicable General Data Protection Regulation. The Regulation provides that Member States may lay down more specific rules relating to the processing of data in the exercise of the right to freedom of expression and information, the use of personal identification numbers, the processing of data in the context of an employment relationship and other personal data processing cases provided for in the Regulation. Taking this into account, amendments to the law on Legal Protection of Personal Data were made, establishing additional provisions for the processing of personal data that are specific only to Lithuania.

The new wording of the law on Legal Protection of Personal Data establishes the peculiarities of data processing specifically related to the processing of personal code and processing of personal data for the purpose of freedom of expression and  information, regulates the peculiarities of personal data processing related to employment relations, and establishes the age limit for a child to whom the information society service is offered.
